Playing with Shadows

The theme of a recent show, Coupling, inspired a playful new direction; some experimenting with a shadow image where something different from the subject is happening in the shadow.  This work is a bit abstract but that is how it originated.

I am still drawn to the orange tones.  All my Coupling entries were orangy, sunset light tones.

Collaboration Show

Reverie

This month, Alma Sanbern and I created this 2 Panel work for a collaboration show at TOSA in Denver Colorado.  The show runs  through the month of October.  We both agreed that it was lots of fun and very satisfying to work together.

Container Show

This is called
The Heart is but a small vessel...
and was inspired by a quotation from an ancient Egyptian Christian mystic called Macarius about how the heart holds all things.  This painting will be hanging in WCA Colorado's Container Show at Core New Art Space Gallery at 9th and Santa Fe from August 19 to
 September 5.

Summer Painting

I am doing all my posting at http://sixweeksofsummerpainting.blogspot.com for the summer.  That is, unless I have something outside my daily painting project to post.

Horizon Revisited

Something about the dust in the air makes the New Mexican sky unique and spectacular.
This is my third and largest sunset so far.  I approached all three by blocking in with acrylic then painting the detail in oil.  These move away from my Horizon series in that there is more realism and movement.

Loosening up in the Vineyard

This is a work in progress.  The background is a collage of vegetable photos. I then painted in the Bookcliffs and rows of vines in a very loose hand, in acrylic.  May finish up with a matte coating.

The second version is the same loose hand using oil on paper.  Just playing.

Work in Progress

It seems like I am stuck in green since I started painting the vineyard so this is an off shoot of that playing.
What to add?  I am thinking of dark worms in the dirt, an insect or a shovel slicing through the earth.  It may sit awhile until the answer comes yet be sure I am working on it.

Mask Finished

Mt Garfield's Gaze will be on display at the Cherry Creek Mall with
hundreds of masks in the Mask Project during the month of April .
I love how the bookcliffs of Grand County suggest eyebrows.

Love Bites

Working in oil on paper has become very exciting for me.  It dries faster and has a more immediate feel to it compared to working on canvas.  I painted Love Bites to donate to the AIGA Heart Art auction but it was not dry enough to frame.  Maybe I will save it for next year.

Love Bites is hanging in the Bemis Library in WCA-CO's show, Anything Goes, for the month of March.

The Mask Project

The Denver Hospice produces The Mask Project every 2 years.  I am thrilled to be one of the contributors this year.  The masks will hang in theCherry Creek Shopping Center for the month of April and will be available for viewing and for bidding at http://www.themaskproject.org/. This event, including a gala on May 1, is a major source of funding for end of life care in the Denver metro area.  If I am lucky my mask may be hanging next to some local celebrity's mask, like The Fray or John Elway or a big name like Michelle Obama.

Experimenting with water

Experimenting with water

If you feel some movement in this painting I will consider myself successful at portraying water.
